The look of someone in a bathrobe says it all, doesn’t it? Worn at the right moment, robes shout super sexy, cozy comfort, or down and out. The robe is so iconic that it’s often used in movies to convey a mood or set a scene. Can anyone dispute the mood of Bill Murray sitting on the side of a bed in his robe and slippers in the movie Lost in Translation?

Hello Spring!  At long last the winter season has been swept out by the arrival of the vernal equinox when the sun is directly over the equator. Did you feel it happen last Saturday at 5:37 a.m.? Nope! neither did we, but it certainly made our hearts lighter when we woke up to the first spring weekend even if it didn’t quite feel like it!

Chemise Please! Plus… the lowdown on the nightgown

The chemise has come a long way from a simple undergarment. Our bedtime favorite ranges in many styles and colors, don’t you wish you had them all?

Of all the styles available at Julianna Rae one of the more exotic may be the Chemise!  And, it’s not because of the way it looks but because of how tricky its name is to pronounce and the fact that most people don’t know what it is. If you want to learn to say the word then phonetically it’s \shə-ˈmēz.  Still stuck?  Then try “shuh” and “mees”, put it together more quickly each time and you’ve got it… “shuhmees”!  

That wasn’t so hard, was it?  Being able to pronounce it is one small victory, knowing what it is is another. At its most basic a Chemise is a short or mid-length (no longer than mid-calf), always sleeveless nightgown that is typically loose-fitting. Essentially, the chemise is the shorter sister of the long nightgown.

A Chemise makes the perfect slip dress! The secret to invisible undergarments: a simple strapless bra and plain thong in a nude shade that’s as close to your skin tone as possible.

In modern French, a “chemise” is simply a man’s nightshirt. But before the late 18th century a chemise was a simple undergarment worn next to the skin. In fact, until the early 1800’s it was the ONLY article of clothing worn underneath, and (lucky for the wearer!) was the only piece of clothing washed weekly.  

Also around this same time, the “category” of sleepwear came into being when higher class women began to wear chemise-like gowns exclusively to bed.  These became known as nightshifts.  The shifts later morphed into the negligee with a shorter hem and softer, more sheer fabrics used in their construction.  This garment was soon seen as a symbol of wealth and became the predecessor of the modern nightgown.  

But the nightgown wasn’t always a garment associated with the female gender.  Prior to the 18th-century, nightgowns were predominantly worn by men – think Ebenezer Scrooge!  Whether worn by a male or female, nightgowns were, and still are, made of a wide range of fabrics.  Depending on the weather and class of person wearing the gown it could be made of anything from simple cotton, to fine linen, silk, damask, brocade, velvet, taffeta, satin, or wool with linings of satin or fur for the colder weather.

Through the years both the nightgown and chemise have transformed from plain utilitarian undergarments to modern-day staples worn for bed. More recently, they’ve also emerged as daywear.  With embellishments like embroidery and lace and gorgeous fabrics like silk, it would be a shame to wear a chemise only to bed!

Hello July! …and Welcome National Ice Cream Month!

Slowing Down – It can be so hot in July that we think going slow is a pretty good speed especially if you’ve got a porch swing or a hammock!  (Need some ideas for keeping cool?  Check out our Big Chill list, go ahead, we’ll wait right here until you come back!)  If the swing or hammock happened to be vacant then pour an icy cold lemonade and grab a good book because the only breeze about to blow are the pages that you turn as you whip through the latest beach read.  Absolutely one of our favorite ways to slow down ever!

The BEACH! (or the lake, or the swimming pool….) – Speaking of the beach, July just screams sand between your toes, doesn’t it?  (And, in your sandwich, your drink and everywhere else for that matter!)  But, if you live in the midwest then a nice cool lake or pool might be your go-to place to ride out July’s heat.  Regardless of where you go to cool down don’t forget to socially distance and bring along your mask!  While lounging in that beach chair those toes will definitely be showing so pick out one of these fab popular nail colors for Summer 2020 and brighten those little piggies up before cooling them off in the surf, ahhhh!

“Skintastic” Clothing – July is a great time to show off a little skin, isn’t it?  Clothing choices are lightweight and comfortable even if you are heading back to your socially distant office this month.  A sparkling silk cami top goes great under a business jacket and wow does it ever shine for an evening walk in the park!  What?  You never had the pleasure of wearing a pair of silk tap pants to bed?  We highly recommend them.  They are gorgeous to look at and will have you feeling like the Queen of your bed!  Since you’re going to be showing all that skin, did you know that keeping it moisturized is as easy as what you eat?

Bountiful Flowers and Veggies! – Farmer’s markets, roadside farm stands, and our own vegetable gardens are all ways we get to add more veggies to our plates.  And, the heat and light of July gives growing power to every little thing!  Need to add some strength training to your daily routine?  Fill up a 3-gallon watering can (the weight is about 8lbs a gallon!), and water your plants.  The relief comes when the can is empty and your plants will be giving you silent thank you’s for the cool drink.  

Did someone say COOL Drinks? – It’s not just the plants that love a long, cool drink and July just happens to be perfect lemonade weather.  There are so many ways to enjoy this simple drink that a Google search found 47,400,000 results!  Wow!  But it’s not only lemonade that we love to drink cold… how about flavored waters, cold Chardonnays, frothy, cold beer in chilled glasses, iced teas and coffees, and heavenly milkshakes which brings us to another great thing about this month…

July is National Ice Cream Month! – Yes, we get to balance off all the heat of July with delectable frozen treats in the form of… ice cream!  Even though vanilla is America’s favorite flavor, take a walk on the wild side and promise yourself to try something unusual the next time you’re picking up some of the cold stuff.  There are so many flavors to choose from!  How about Roasted Tumeric and Candied Ginger if you happen to be in Alaska, Devil’s Breath Carolina Reaper Pepper Ice Cream when in Delaware (you must sign a waiver before even tasting this one!) or Salted Pretzel when in Kansas.  Thankfully July has 31 days in the month so there’s ample opportunity to try just about anything your heart desires!

#TBT – Coffee Talk with the Girls

Here’s a #TBT when we could have breakfast with our friends to talk about last night’s date or game night with the kids…  If you are longing for the good old days of face to face contact during this time of #socialdistancing do not despair – the opportunity for coffee with the gals will return soon!  Until then, it’s entirely okay to hang a little longer in something as comfortable as what our models were wearing for this photoshoot – especially if it’s made of cotton!
